🩺 I Am a Medical Professional Supporting Thalassemia Fighters in Sabah

Introduction

“As a medical professional, I do more than provide treatment—I stand with patients, families, and our community.”

Every day, I meet individuals living with Thalassemia. They inspire me with their resilience. However, they also remind me that support must extend beyond clinic doors. That’s why I work with PERKETHA—to provide care, raise awareness, and promote long-term impact.

Why Thalassemia Needs More Attention

Thalassemia is a genetic condition that affects the production of healthy red blood cells. Although treatment is possible, patients often require frequent blood transfusions and ongoing medical attention. In Sabah especially, many families face financial and logistical barriers to receiving consistent care.

Moreover, public awareness remains low. Without proper knowledge, individuals may unknowingly pass on the condition. Therefore, as a medical provider, I believe we must engage communities in early education and prevention.

How I Support the Thalassemia Community

My responsibilities don’t stop at the consultation room. In fact, I actively contribute to improving Thalassemia care through several actions:

  • Firstly, I educate families about Thalassemia inheritance and testing.

  • Secondly, I guide patients through ongoing care, including treatment plans.

  • In addition, I join community outreach events, such as screening programs.

  • Finally, I collaborate with PERKETHA to help organize awareness and blood donation campaigns.

As a result, patients receive more than treatment—they gain confidence, knowledge, and hope.

What Everyone Should Know

If you’re unfamiliar with Thalassemia, consider the following key points:

  • It is inherited, not contagious.

  • Many people carry the gene without symptoms.

  • With simple blood tests, early detection is possible.

  • Blood donations are critical for those who rely on transfusions.

For this reason, I encourage everyone to learn more, ask questions, and spread awareness. After all, every bit of effort makes a difference.

Why I Support PERKETHA

PERKETHA connects patients, families, and medical professionals. Through this organization, I’ve witnessed stronger support systems, increased knowledge, and improved patient outcomes.

Furthermore, PERKETHA brings healthcare into rural areas, organizes vital programs, and advocates for better policies. That’s why I am proud to stand alongside them. Together, we amplify each other’s work and bring greater hope to Sabah.

What You Can Do

Whether you’re a nurse, doctor, pharmacist, or student, your voice matters. Here are a few ways you can support the cause:

  • Join a PERKETHA outreach program

  • Donate blood or encourage others to do so

  • Share Thalassemia facts in your workplace

  • Offer time or skills to volunteer clinics

In conclusion, no action is too small. Every step brings us closer to stronger, healthier communities.

“When we care beyond the clinic, we create change that lasts.”
